Betty Lawayne Holy, 79, of Thompson’s Station, Tennessee, and formerly of Crosby, Texas, passed away Wednesday, January 4, 2023, just two days before her 80th birthday.
Lawayne was born January 6, 1943, to Thomas Bryant Thompson and Betty Lou Davis Ercanbrack in Brazoria County, Texas. She graduated from Galena Park High School and married her high school sweetheart, Robert Covington, in 1961. Throughout their marriage of 23 years, they lived in Texas, Louisiana and Tennessee and had two daughters, Robbin and Connie. Though their marriage wasn’t permanent, they remained friends and family throughout their lives.
Lawayne remarried in 1985 to Gordon Holy in Crosby, Texas. They were very involved in and around Crosby and were both prominent members of the American Legion and the Ladies Auxiliary, where each held offices, including president, for years. She enjoyed her involvement in projects, planning, fundraising, and helping others. She was widowed in 1999 when Gordon passed away unexpectedly.
Lawayne was highly active and involved in many regular activities throughout her lifetime. From softball to bowling leagues, fishing, fundraising events, gardening, school engagements, volunteering, serving on various boards of directors, and being a member of multiple organizations. She was never bored, always busy, and never stopped. She worked for many years and eventually became a businesswoman after opening an office supply store in Crosby, Texas, and later became an avid antique collector and dealer.
She was blessed with six grandchildren who referred to her as Gramz. Four of whom are adults, three married, one graduating high school this year, and the youngest about to finish middle school.
Her favorite hobbies included reading books, cooking and baking. She took great pleasure in decorating and celebrating Christmas every year. She would also challenge anyone who denied that she was the #1 fan of the Dallas Cowboys - which made conversations with her sister, Carrolyn, very interesting!
She was also an avid dog lover throughout her life. Her latest was her beloved toy Yorkie, Tassi, whom she took with her everywhere she went. With bows in her hair and dressed in puppy apparel, Tassi was just as much a socialite as Lawayne, and everyone would stop them in their tracks to see Tassi. Tassi preceded Lawayne in death at age 18 (human years) in 2022.
Lawayne moved back to Tennessee to live near her youngest daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren in 2016. Unfortunately, 2019 began a long, never-ending battle for her, medically and physically, hindering her from continuing all her favorite things and enjoying life as she always knew it to be. She will be sorely missed, but she is now in a better place, free of pain and sorrow, and will continue to be in our hearts forever.
Lawayne is survived by her two daughters, Robbin (Jack) Larkin and Connie (Jonathan) McVicker; granddaughters, Lauren (Mitchell) Collins-Bailey and Allyssa McVicker; grandsons, Brent (Juan) Bonilla, Coby (Erica) Larkin, Matthew Larkin, and Ryan McVicker; sister, Carrolyn Briers; niece, Tammy (Brice) Fuselier; great-niece, Autumn Oliver; great-nephew, Hunter Oliver.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Holy, her parents Tommy (Pat) Thompson & Betty (Alan) Ercanbrack, and nephew, Brandon Smith.
