Obituary

Ellen Vaupel Nichols, a beloved member of Franklin, passed away peacefully in her hometown of Franklin, Tennessee, on July 2, 2026. Born on April 14, 1946, in Franklin, Ellen’s life was marked by devotion to her family, her students, her church, and her many passions.

Ellen was a proud graduate of Franklin High School, class of 1964, where she distinguished herself as head majorette and as a member of the school band. In 1964, she was honored as Miss MTEMC, a reflection of her character and kindness that would define her life. She furthered her education at Tennessee Tech, where she played oboe in the university orchestra, and went on to graduate from David Lipscomb University.

For 18 years, Ellen dedicated herself to teaching third grade at Walnut Grove Elementary, guiding and nurturing countless students, fostering a love of learning, and making a lasting impact in their lives. Her commitment to education was evident in her gentle approach and her steadfast belief in every child’s potential.

Ellen’s life outside the classroom was equally rich and active. She helped found the Oakwood Swim and Tennis Club, where she remained an active and enthusiastic participant on both the ladies’ and couples’ tennis teams. For 15 years, she brought friends and neighbors together through the Gourmet Club in Oakwood Estates, sharing not only her culinary skills but also her warmth and laughter.

A gifted baker, Ellen was well known for her homemade iced chocolate brownies, a special Sunday treat she lovingly prepared for her congregation at Heritage Church of Christ. Her faith and generosity extended to her community, always offering comfort, food, and friendship to those around her.

Family was at the heart of Ellen’s life. She will be deeply missed by her devoted husband, Larry Nichols; her son, John Nichols; her daughter, Ragan (Jimmy) Veach; her cherished grandsons, Jaxon (Christine) Veach and Gavon Veach; and her sister, Brenda Dale. The bonds she shared with her family were a defining source of joy, especially the special relationship she had with her two grandsons. Ellen's legacy of love, kindness, and encouragement will continue to inspire those who knew her.

The family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to Ellen’s caregivers, with a special acknowledgement to Dinke Allen, for their attentive care and compassion in these final years.

Visitation will be held on Monday, July 6, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Williamson Memorial Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 3009 Columbia Avenue, Franklin, TN. The funeral service will take place at the same location on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., followed by burial at Williamson Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be John Nichols, Jimmy Veach, Jaxon Veach, Gavon Veach, Chuck Dale, and Jeremy Nichols.

Ellen Vaupel Nichols’s steady presence, her passions, and her love will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and all whose lives she touched. She will be remembered dearly and missed profoundly.
