Hugh Johnston DuPree passed away peacefully at his home on August 17, 2025, just days before his 86th birthday. Born on August 25, 1939, in Knoxville, Tennessee, Hugh’s life was a true testament to faith, devotion, service, and family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Patricia Wallace DuPree; their three devoted children: Katherine Mace Simpson (Wes), Hugh Johnston DuPree, Jr. (Amy), and Elizabeth DuPree Stein (Shooter); seven grandchildren, Hugh III, Harrison, Savannah, Gigi, Rachel, Conner and Colton; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, William Ralph DuPree; mother, Elizabeth Johnston DuPree; and brothers, Sonny and Dan. A proud 1957 graduate of the McCallie School, Hugh went on to attend the University of Tennessee, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and played on the university's tennis team. He later earned his master’s degree while stationed at Langley AFB in Virginia. He was an Eagle Scout and remained a lifelong supporter of the Boy Scouts of America, serving as a Scoutmaster in the Middle Tennessee Council and shaping the lives of countless young men. Hugh proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for 21 years, retiring with honor as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1985. Following his military career, he turned his attention to community journalism and civic life, serving as Publisher for the Review Appeal, Brentwood Journal, and Franklin Journal. Later, he continued his public service as a court officer for Williamson County, where his commanding voice and presence became a fixture of the courtroom. His commitment to his community was extensive. Hugh was a past Chairman of the Republican Party of Williamson County (2001–2005), a delegate to the 2004 Republican National Convention, and was honored as Republican of the Year in 2014. He was appointed to Governor Alexander’s Education Task Force and served as a Natchez Trace Commissioner. Hugh actively contributed to numerous organizations, including the American Legion, Retired Officers Association, and the Franklin Rotary Club. He was also a board member of the Emergency Relief Fund, Literacy Council, Williamson County United Way, and the American Red Cross.
A man of deep faith, Hugh was an Elder at First Presbyterian Church, Franklin, where he found spiritual grounding and served his congregation faithfully. He was a founding member of The Bible Class Sunday School, often served as a liturgist, and especially cherished his time attending and leading the Saturday Men’s Bible Study. He worked passionately to clean up and preserve the natural beauty of the Harpeth River, restoring its banks and founding the Franklin Canoe Company so that others could share in the peace and joy the river brought him.
Hugh will be remembered not only for his many accomplishments but also for the character and spirit with which he lived his life. Known for his generosity, humility, and sharp wit, he was the very definition of a gentleman. He found joy in working in the yard, cheering on the Tennessee Vols, and sitting at the piano, where he played with warmth and flair. Most of all, he delighted in his family, to whom he devoted his deepest love, care, and pride. His integrity, faith, and unwavering commitment to service leave a legacy far greater than words can capture. Hugh’s quiet strength and steady presence made the world better for everyone who knew him. His legacy lives on in the family who adored him, the community he served, and the countless lives he touched with kindness and grace. A service celebrating Hugh’s life will be 1:00 PM Wednesday, September 3, 2025 at First Presbyterian Church, 101 Legends Club Lane, Franklin, TN 37069. Visitation with the family will take place at the church from 11:00 AM until 1:00PM before the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to First Presbyterian Church of Franklin; the Harpeth Conservancy or a charity of your choice in Hugh’s honor.
