James Humphrey

October 6, 1953 — February 1, 2017

JAMES LEROY HUMPHREY, son of the late James Philip Humphrey and Margaret (Hurd) Humphrey entered into Eternal Rest on Wednesday, February 1, 2017 following a long courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Sidney, Ohio, he received his early education in the Sidney Public School system. Following high school graduation he attended Miami University in Ohio and completed his BS and MS Degrees in Education at Tennessee State University.
He was married to Bonnye Worford and to this union two daughters, Jaimee Leah and Alesha Kate were born.
James taught in the Franklin Special School System until his health failed. While teaching, he touched many lives with his kind spirit and dedication to his students and others who crossed his path. He also worked for many years at the Franklin Boys & Girls Club, helping with the afterschool and summer programs.
James was called to the ministry at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, Sidney, Ohio where he preached his trial sermon. He was ordained in 1991 at Berean Baptist Church, Nashville, TN. He ministered to all he met, praying and delivering the Good News and Gospel, ensuring they knew the Lord Jesus Christ. In the midst of his own battle, he was an inspiration to those who were suffering the devastating disease. Physicians and staff alike were astonished of the fact that he could care so much for others. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, Columbia, TN under the pastorate of Rev. Dwight Church.
Jimi loved to fish. He often said that it wasn't about catching the fish, but more about the fellowship and communion with the Holy Spirit.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Janice L. Gaudy and Helen L. Richard. Survivors, along with his wife and daughters, include his grandson, Cedric (CJ) of whom he was most proud and loved deeply; stepmother Louise Humphrey of Sidney, Ohio; sisters, Rebecca Branham of Bellefontaine, Ohio, Patricia (Walter) Sheffield of Antioch, TN, Mary (Will) Weston of Dawson, GA, several sisters and brothers-in-law, a host of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.

A fitting reminder that we shall meet again is found in the words of this old favorite hymn:
Shall We Gather at the River
Shall we gather at the river,
Where bright angel feet have trod,
With its crystal tide forever
Flowing by the throne of God?
On the margin of the river,
Washing up its silver spray,
We will talk and worship ever,
All the happy golden day.

Yes, we'll gather at the river,
The beautiful, beautiful river;
We will gather at the river, by the throne of God

Ere we reach the shining river,
we'll lay every burden down;
Grace our spirits will deliver,
And provide a robe and crown.

At the smiling of the river,
Mirror of the Savior's face,
Saints, whom death will never sever,
Lift their songs of saving grace.

Soon we'll reach the silver river,
Soon our pilgrimage will cease;
Soon our happy songs will quiver
With a melody of peace.
