Obituary

Victor Walter Goldschmidt, age 90, passed peacefully into the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 4, 2026. He left behind a remarkable legacy of faithfulness, love, commitment, and service.

Victor was born on April 20, 1936, in Montevideo, Uruguay. While attending Syracuse University in New York, he met the love of his life, Denice. Together they shared 68 years of marriage—a lifetime of faith, family, adventure, and steadfast devotion to one another.

Victor earned his Ph.D. and served as a professor of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University for 36 years, including four years as Head of Freshman Engineering. Although his academic career was distinguished, his focus was always on people. When asked what he taught, Victor’s answer was simply, “Students.”

That response describes his heart. Victor was a teacher, mentor, encourager, and lifelong learner. He had a remarkable ability to connect personally with others and was always ready for a meaningful conversation, a word of encouragement, or a prayer.

Victor was an active member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) for 50 years and was recently honored for his five decades of service as a leader and Distinguished Lecturer. His influence extended internationally, as he facilitated the establishment of ASHRAE chapters in several countries beyond the United States. He traveled to over 50 countries in his lifetime, while serving weekly at church and filling various leadership roles in the community and township.

Above all, Victor was a man who loved God and His Word. He was a devoted student of Scripture who delighted in digging deeply into the Bible, cross-referencing passages, exploring the original meanings of words, and continually seeking to know the Lord more. His commitment to the Lord was not reserved for Sundays; it was woven into every part of his life.

Some of Victor’s most treasured moments with God took place along the shores of Lake Michigan, where he and Denice lived for 25 years. He loved walking the beach and wrote short, faith-filled devotions, now cherished by his family. Further down the shoreline was Victor’s special prayer bench, where he regularly spent quiet time with the Lord. Benches also became a treasured tradition with his grandchildren, who built them alongside Victor and placed them throughout the dunes, leaving a legacy for all those who enjoy them today.

Victor is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Denice; his children, Lisa Marion (Glynn), Leanna (Rob), and Matthew (Elaine); his 8 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; and his

3 older sisters, Anna Ruth, Tahleen, and Alice Helen. He also leaves behind extended family members, friends, colleagues, former students, and people around the world whose lives were touched by his teaching, leadership, friendship, and prayers.

His family takes comfort in knowing that the faith he lived in Christ throughout his life has now become sight.

“Well done, good and faithful servant.” Matthew 25:23
